Headache Problems
Often, people who suffer from headaches do so because of the problems in their neck. These are referred to as cervicogenic headaches and typically arise when there is limited movement between joints in your upper cervical spine. Normally, each joint should be able to move freely without affecting any other part of the body.
Causes of headaches
The cervicogenic headache typically is one that affects the neck and head. It may happen on either side of your body, or both sides at once!
This headache is a common and intense migraine. It can be caused by stress, lack of sleep or food, weak muscles in the neck region (due to your head being too heavy), changes in barometric pressure or even an illness like strep throat.
This pain often starts from the base of your skull then travels up toward top of it over several days before going into one arm with painful tenderness around where you feel that ache as well as muscle stiffness for weeks at most after this episode has passed through.
What Triggers Headaches?
Cervicogenic headaches are more common in middle-aged adults and women. They’re brought on by trauma, such as a motor vehicle accident or an earlier concussion. Cervicogenic headache patients often have poor posture like “slouching” forward with their head.
What We Do
If you experience any of the following symptoms, please contact us immediately: sudden headache that feels different from previous headaches, new or worsening headache, neck stiffness and trouble moving your head normally.
If these are paired with light-headedness, dizziness, numbness in face or arms/legs (tingling), losing consciousness for a brief moment while standing up suddenly after laying down to rest on couch / bed overnight, contact us.
At-Home Treatment For Headaches
Drink Water
Remember to drink 6-8 glasses of water each day, especially in hot weather or when you’ve been sweating. Also, medications are often not helpful for cervicogenic headaches because they’re caused by a mechanical problem; fortunately our office has several tools which can help solve this issue!
Frequently Asked Questions: Headaches
Q. Can a chiropractor help with headaches in Newcastle-under-Lyme and Stoke-on-Trent?
Yes. Newcastle Chiropractic Clinic on Blackfriars Road, Newcastle-under-Lyme has been helping patients from across the area – including Stoke-on-Trent, Keele, Kidsgrove, and Crewe – manage and reduce headaches through chiropractic care. Many headaches, particularly cervicogenic (neck-related) headaches and tension headaches, are linked to restricted joint movement and muscle tension in the upper neck. Our chiropractors carry out a thorough assessment to identify whether your headaches have a spinal cause, and if appropriate, provide hands-on treatment to the joints and soft tissues of the cervical spine. For patients closer to the city centre, our sister clinic City Chiropractic on Epworth Street, Stoke-on-Trent offers the same expert care.
Q. What is a cervicogenic headache and how is it different from a migraine?
A cervicogenic headache originates from the neck – specifically from restricted or dysfunctional joints in the upper cervical spine – and refers pain into the head. Unlike a migraine, which is a neurological condition often accompanied by nausea, visual disturbances, and light sensitivity, a cervicogenic headache tends to be felt on one side of the head, worsens with certain neck movements or sustained postures, and may be accompanied by neck stiffness or shoulder tension. Chiropractors are trained to differentiate between headache types. If your headache is cervicogenic in origin, spinal manipulation, mobilisation, and soft tissue therapy directed at the neck can be highly effective. Standard pain medication typically provides only short-term relief because it does not address the underlying mechanical cause.
Q. How many chiropractic sessions will I need to see improvement in my headaches?
This varies depending on how long you have been experiencing headaches, their frequency and severity, and whether there are any contributing lifestyle factors such as posture, stress, or screen time. Many patients report noticeable improvement within three to six sessions, though chronic or long-standing headache patterns may require a longer course of care. At your initial consultation at Newcastle Chiropractic Clinic, your chiropractor will outline a clear, personalised treatment plan – including an honest timeframe – so you know exactly what to expect before committing to any course of treatment.
