Our Stoke Chiropractor Explains Chiropractic Adjustments

Chiropractic remains one of the most popular forms of complementary medicine in the United Kingdom. Although it was first developed over 100 years ago, it is a constantly evolving discipline, with new types of chiropractic adjustments being created over time.

The evolution of chiropractic care means that patients visiting Newcastle Chiropractic Clinic have several types of chiropractic adjustments available. Your chiropractor will choose the right adjustments to perform based on your symptoms. However, you can also request to have a certain type of adjustment performed.

In this post, our Stoke Chiropractor will explain how the most common chiropractic adjustments work. This information will make you better informed when you visit a Stoke chiro and help you make the most of your visit.

Direct Thrust Technique (Spinal Manipulation)

This technique is the most well known chiropractic adjustment. It involves using high-velocity thrusts to correct vertebral misalignment in the spine. Each thrust is very short and just strong enough to ensure each vertebrae is in its correct position.

The direct thrust technique generates a small cracking sound. This sound is created by the change in pressure that occurs within the joint, which forces the release of gas bubbles. Although many people visiting our chiropractor in Stoke on Trent for the first time are shocked to hear a cracking noise, it is completely safe and does not cause any pain.

Chiropractors only use the required amount of pressure to adjust the vertebrae they are working on. Although the procedure is typically done by hand, small instruments can also be used.

Spinal Mobilisation

Spinal mobilisation also focuses on correcting vertebral misalignments in the spine. However, it is a gentler technique which is sometimes used on patients who are suffering from degenerative bone conditions like osteoporosis. This type of adjustment uses a combination of firm pressure and stretches instead of thrusts. The pressure encourages spinal joints to move back into correct alignment.

Myofascial Release

The body’s muscles are surrounded and supported by a soft membrane of myofascial tissue. This tissue can sometimes become overly tight or sensitive, leading to a condition called myofascial pain syndrome.

Chiropractors can treat this condition by performing an examination of your body’s myofascial tissue and performing “myofascial release”. This treatment involves the massage and stretching of any tight or rigid myofascial tissue. This helps to release pressure, relieve pain and restore mobility.

Muscle Energy Technique

This is another form of myofascial release that targets any “trigger points” for pain found in your myofascial tissue. Unlike standard myofascial release, this treatment requires client participation.

The client will be asked to tighten various muscles in their body as the chiropractor applies counter pressure for several seconds. It may be repeated numerous times on each muscle in an effort to stretch myofascial tissue in the area. This treatment can relieve pain, promote healing, and increase mobility.

Articulatory

This is another very common chiropractic adjustment. Articulatory involves slow movements of a limb throughout its entire range of motion in an effort to improve mobility, remedy stiffness, and relieve pain.

Cervical Spine Manipulation

The cervical spine is located in the neck. If it is misaligned, it can cause headaches, muscular tension, upper back pain, limited range of motion, and problems affecting the jaw. Chiropractors use both direct thrust and spinal mobilisation to treat these problems.

Indirect Positional Technique

Many of the people who visit a Stoke chiro suffer from “hypertonic muscles”, which are muscles that are overly toned. This condition can lead to tightness and pain. It’s common for people with sedentary jobs who only get a chance to exercise a couple of times a week to suffer from this kind of issue. Individuals who exercise for several hours at a time are also prone to suffering from hypertonic muscles.

A chiropractor can help by using the indirect positional technique. They will start by holding the joint in a neutral position before applying force to lengthen the muscles in that region. This can release tightness and restore mobility.

I have actually found someone who believed me when I say how much pain I was in and that there was actually something wrong. That alone was worth so so much. To actually walk away from a first appointment pain free, even though I know I need further treatments, is something I did not expect. 7 years of pain and I believe Dr Burcu Cetinkaya can genuinely help me. She is calm, patient and totally amazing. I cannot recommend highly enough. Thank you so much!

I first booked a visit to the clinic about 12 months ago after suffering headaches and neck problems for over 20 years which had suddenly progressed into bouts of vertigo. The friendly reception staff make you feel welcome and Dr. Finn was really professional and knowledgeable. I started to feel an improvement from my first treatment and now feel better than I have in years. I can't recommended them highly enough. I wish I'd booked in years ago. Thank you so much.
