baking back care advice from our newcastle under lyme chiropractorThe new series of The Great British Bake Off is underway and we’re excited. This years batch of eager bakers seem like a talented bunch if the rate that Paul is handing out his handshakes is anything to go by. It’s very easy to get caught up in the baking bug watching the programme.

Over the years since the show started there has been a surge in baking. Taking to the kitchen and baking can be a great thing, however, as always our chiropractors at our chiropractic clinic in Newcastle under Lyme are keen to make sure you keep your back safe. Yes, there are even hazards to your back when baking (and shopping for those heavy ingredients!).

Stocking the cupboards for your baking exploits can include heavy food items such as bags of flour, sugar and fruit. Lifting and carrying can frequently be the cause of back pain which could be avoided by following some simple advice:

  • Don’t overload one shopping bag and carry that. Pack your groceries into many bags and distribute the weight evenly across them.
  • Use a trolley, however, avoid using an unwieldy trolley as you may find yourself twisting and contorting your body to keep it under control.
  • When lifting your bags, remember to lift by bending your knees and not your back.
  • Always face in the direction you want to go in to avoid twisting your body.

If course, it’s not just ingredients that can be heavy – pots, pans and cooking equipment such a mixers can also be heavy and cumbersome.

At home, avoid over reaching or twisting your body when reaching for ingredients or cooking equipment.

Bakers and chefs often suffer back pain and one of the main culprits is often the height of the counter top they are working at. If you are finding yourself working at a counter top that’s too low  then you may find yourself putting more strain than is necessary on your back when stooping over the counter. If your counter top is too low then spread your feet wider to lower your body down. You can also use a chopping board with enough height to make a difference.

Remember to take regular breaks when you are baking, especially if you are doing a few hours worth! It’s advisable to do a few simple stretches to also help prevent stiffening up.

Keep your back bake safe by following these simple pieces of advice from our chiropractors.

If you are suffering back aches and pains our chiropractors at Newcastle Chiropractic Clinic are here to help. You can call to book an appointment on 01782 711 191.

First time I went was due to my very bad back pain, didn't have much hope as doctors didn't do anything just kept me on medication that wasn't easing my pain much. Dr Burcu Cetinkaya helped me more than i could say in words, she made a plan for me, did my treatments and gave me exercises to ease my pain and it worked amazingly. I am not struggling with back pain and very happy with the result. Recomand with trust.
